let’s talk
Share your thoughts on hunger, humanitarian aid, or just helping others. Hungry Hokies is just one way to help your fellow neighbor, what’s another way that you know about?

This music video reminds me of this cause. For one day, you’re giving up something so basic – food – and working to understand what it’s like to be hungry. So I figured I’d share the song because of its message! Enjoy.
I found an article written in the Roanoke Times, by Mary Hardbarger, that discusses the Food Pantries in the New River Valley.
“Several area food pantries are facing food and money shortages because of an increase in need and a decrease in donations… At the Blacksburg Interfaith Food Pantry, Director Fredda Cromer said she has seen an increase in customers as well. ‘There are just so many more people than we are used to,’ Cromer said. ‘Just this past month, we served over 700 people.’ ”

I found another article that tells about a fast-a-thon from another University that was helped them to raise 17,000 for a local food pantry.

An article that focuses on world hunger and how it is rising at an alarming rate.

Hey guys, this is a poem I found that seemed pretty cool:
My McChicken at One
Sweat drips down through my eyes
As I’m filled with a pain not yet identified
I look for my McChicken at one only to found out that my appetite resides with the sun
I’m waiting, I’m pacing, I’m thinking but the only pain I see isn’t with my hunger
Today is the day you all fast but to what purpose does this purpose last
I see the little girl on the front page of the Fast-a-thon brochure and wonder why is she inferior
But at the same time, why does she somehow seem prettier
Why does she seem better than the iCarly I see on T.V.
Or the girl on that show on Disney
Fasting embraces feelings for the inferior so that we defeat our naivety
We fast to see how the poor feel daily
And through this we defeat the animosity and we strive for worldly tranquility
So I put down my McChicken at one but not only to embrace the inferior
This little girl on the brochure who seems so dear to me is now speaking so vividly
And I realize it’s not to feel bad for her is the reason that I fast
It’s not only to defeat the naivety
I fast so I can purify me
I fast so I can see clearly
Cause when I don’t eat, I’m controlling me
It’s like a mirror into who I am and my reflection has the answers you see
I don’t fast just to feel what the hungry feel, I fast to make a better me
Because that girl doesn’t need food to be in tranquility
She already has all the tools to be
At peace in her heart, and that’s what fasting is you see
This little girl now appears superior to me
I fast so that I appear just as beautiful as the little girl on the front of the brochure
She doesn’t need our definition of materialistic beauty, she already has more
So now my McChicken at one is postponed with the sun
I look down at my watch and think; is it 5 more hours of fasting for me?
Or 5 hours more of true tranquility
I just recently learned that religions all around the world fast, and not just Muslims and Christians. And upon learning this, my friend showed me a good song, that pretty much sums up how I feel about fasting anf religion right now. No matter what religion you are, we all believe in a God or higher power. And if you’re not religious, then have a kind heart and simply help out for the common good. Just pretend like you forgot to pack lunch that day, it’s not too hard.
Click on the album “In the Ever” and click on the song “I Love You and Buddha Too.” Then sit back and enjoy.
From food and water
Today we fast
To help the needy
I hope we last!
It looks like we’re out of time
So enough with rhymes
Get on your feet
And lets start to eat!
But wait, before I go
To eat my juicy mango
One last corny piece
So this poem can finally cease:
Roses are red
Violets are blue
I’m going hungry
So you don’t have to

Food is a basic need that everyone should have access to! We Hokies are getting a fantastic education, and get to experience a wealth of opportunities, while right next door we have children going hungry. This is disgraceful! Each of us has the power to end hunger, so let’s come together to raise awareness and food to feed those in need.
